Crabby Norwegians
Years ago, the red king crab invaded Norwegian waters and was considered a pest, making headlines such as, "Devouring Norway’s Fauna" and "Biological Terrorism." Today, it is becoming another Norwegian success story. The king crab industry is where Norway’s salmon industry was 30 years ago as, consumers are anxious to buy them.
The harvesting season is limited and the crab’s meatiness (meat volume in the legs) is often poor, so there is a challenge to earning a profit in this business. However, researchers have been working with the problem and have developed a system of catching the crabs in the ocean and feeding them until their meatiness is right, to be sold at a high price. It takes about 2 months to "fatten up" the crabs for sale.
